What is the Citywide Wayfinding and Signage Plan?

This plan will provide an inventory of existing signage on Torrance City streets and to plan for new, or upgrade existing, wayfinding signage across the City.

A comprehensive inventory and assessment of all traffic and wayfinding signage in the city will help improve mobility, safety, and efficiency for all modes of transportation. The plan will help achieve goals for sustainable travel by emphasizing signage that helps people travel to and from a new Metro Green Line light rail station currently under construction, which will provide improved connections to destinations in the South Bay and across the Los Angeles region. Improved wayfinding will also help enhance the City’s identity and sense of place for residents and visitors alike.

This project is being led by The Office of Economic Development, with support from a team of transportation planning consultants. The project is funded by the Southern California Association of Governments.

What is Wayfinding Signage

Image of Torrance Gateway signWayfinding signage is placed in public places to help people find their way to a destination. You may have seen wayfinding signage near popular visitor destinations, in downtown areas, or even in the airport or at the mall. Wayfinding signage is designed to help people safely and conveniently reach their ultimate destination and is especially important for those traveling on foot, by bicycle, or on transit.

Why Does Signage and Wayfinding Matter?

Wayfinding signage provides clear, accessible information to all users traveling throughout the City, whether for work or leisure. Specifically, wayfinding signage:

  • Helps visitors and residents become more familiar with options for traveling by transit or bicycle or on foot in Torrance and helps them find the best routes to their destination.

  • Provides accurate information on mileage and travel time, which is especially helpful in encouraging more short trips to be made by foot or bicycle instead of driving.

  • Improves safety by alerting drivers to use extra caution around people walking and biking along their travel route.

  • Fosters a sense of place and reinforces the unique identity of a community.

Where should wayfinding be prioritized in Torrance?

Wayfinding can make navigating the City easier and more intuitive, and should be prioritized in the following areas: Image of a concrete slab that says Torrance

  • On routes to important destinations

  • On key transit routes and near new and existing transit centers, like the Torrance Regional Transit Center

  • In places where people are most likely to walk or bike to reach their destination

  • In places where people sometimes have difficulty finding their way
