Community Services

Torrance offers residents the unique opportunity to help achieve a sense of purpose, identity, self-worth and improved self-esteem within the specialized areas of Cultural Arts, Library, Parks and Recreation.

Hospitals

Torrance is home to two state-of-the-art hospitals:

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is a fully accredited, full-service, 446-bed, nonprofit community medical center. Torrance Memorial is a pioneer in prevention, education and community services, serving more than 30,000 people per year.

Little Company of Mary is a member of the Providence Health System and is a premier provider of comprehensive medical and health services. The hospital provides the latest techniques in invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures and comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation services.

Public Safety

The Torrance Fire Department was established in 1912, and is dedicated to protecting the community and providing life safety; environmental protection; and property conservation through education; hazard reduction; and emergency response. Among the few fire departments in the nation that holds a Class 1 classification by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), the Torrance Fire Department is committed to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, and service to the community. 

The Torrance Police Department has been proudly serving the community of Torrance for more than 80 years. The Police Department's mission is to preserve public safety and the quality of life; to respond effectively to the changing needs of the community; and to promote mutual respect between the Police Department and the people. The Department's primary concern is community safety. The men and women of the Torrance Police Department are wholeheartedly committed to the goal of keeping our neighborhoods free from crime.

Recycling / Energy Conservation

The City of Torrance, including the City Council, residents and businesses are committed to raising awareness about conservation and recycling. Through various waste collection, reduction, and recycling programs, Torrance residents and businesses recycle more than 10,000 tons each year.

RMDZ logoTorrance is a member of the Los Angeles County Recycling Marketing Development Zone program. This program combines recycling with economic development to fuel new businesses, expand existing ones, create jobs, and divert waste from landfills.

Torrance also participates in the Clean Bay Certified Restaurants program to recognize restaurants that do their part to prevent pollution from entering the Santa Monica Bay.

The South Bay Cities Council of Governments runs a grant-funded program to provide resources and information to businesses and residents called the South Bay Environmental Services Center

Schools (Torrance Unified School District, area colleges/universities)

Torrance Unified School District is comprised of 17 elementary schools, eight middle schools, four high schools, one continuation and one alternative high school. The District also has three adult school campuses. TUSD consistently ranks among the top public schools. 

 

El Camino College LogoEl Camino College offers more than 75 academic programs, various certificate programs and guided pathways to help ensure academic success. More than 30 career education programs are also available. El Camino also works with local employers to help students with job placements, and its Small Business Development Center provides consulting and training to new and growing businesses.

 

CSUDHCalifornia State University, Dominguez Hills is located close to Torrance in the South Bay region. It was founded in 1960 and continues to provide transformational educational experiences grounded in culturally sustaining practices, innovative research, creative activity, and community engagement for undergraduate and graduate students. CSU Dominguez Hills offers a wide range of  degree programs recognized for their academic strength and representing today’s in-demand fields. Fran Fulton, the City's Economic Development Manager is a member of the CSUDH Foundation Board of Directors.
