Torrance, Calif., September 14, 2023 – The City of Torrance is thrilled to launch its Utility Box Public Art Pilot Program. The City’s Cultural Services Division will unveil the new Utility Box Art Web Page on Monday, September 18 with a call to artists and potential sponsors. Torrance community members including Torrance-based artists are invited to submit their designs to contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of our City’s streetscapes and bring art to unexpected places.

The Public Art Pilot Program is open to all Torrance residents and businesses to propose an original design and/or sponsor a Utility Box. Installation of the artwork will be completed by a City approved vendor, and the vinyl material used to wrap each box will include a UV-protective clear coat to protect against sun and other environmental damage. The boxes are located throughout Torrance, including major thoroughfares with traffic signals that are visible to pedestrian, cycling and automobile traffic.

Artworks chosen for the program will enliven areas, transform the streets, and reflect the neighborhoods they are located in. The City will develop a list of resident artists for sponsors to choose from and all resident artists are welcome to apply to be included in that list. The artwork will be family-friendly and suitable for viewing by people of all ages. The Pilot Program includes two boxes in each of the Torrance Districts.
